The Balcony and the Legend at Juliet’s House

What is medieval, what was added in 1940, and where the story of Romeo and Juliet comes from.

The balcony

The famous balcony was added in 1939–1940, when Antonio Avena restored the house. It was assembled from 14th-century marble pieces, so the stone is old even though the balcony is not.

The families

Verona had families called Montecchi and Cappelletti, and Dante mentions them in the Divine Comedy. The love story itself comes from literature: Luigi da Porto’s tale and, later, Shakespeare’s play.
