Read the city in layers

UNESCO describes Verona as a city that kept its Roman street plan and grew through the medieval and Renaissance periods, with monuments from each still in use.

A city guide can give context without turning a street into a backdrop. Notice how a Roman square became a market, how a medieval house meets the street, or how a courtyard opens behind a narrow passage. Respect homes, working businesses and places of worship.

Brick, marble and stone

Red brick, local marble and carved stone give Verona its colour. At Juliet’s House, exposed brick meets marble around the balcony and the doorway.

Begin with a material and ask how it was made, repaired and reused. A photograph alone cannot tell you who made a window frame or a balcony, or the conditions in which they worked.

A Via Cappello chapter

Juliet’s House shows two stories in one building: a medieval tower house, and a 20th-century restoration that gave the legend a balcony.

Look at the meeting of the two: older brickwork around a later balcony, Gothic windows above a cobbled courtyard, and painted rooms that tell the story through art.

Make room for context

Pair this city reading with the house’s history and the Journal. This is an introduction for visitors, not a claim that our team manages these buildings, commissions their restoration or represents their makers.
