About Verona

  • Verona has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000; it became a Roman town in the 1st century BC.
  • The Arena was built around AD 30, and its opera festival began in 1913 with Verdi’s Aida.
  • Juliet’s House on Via Cappello is a medieval house first recorded in 1351; its balcony was assembled from older marble pieces around 1940.
  • Piazza delle Erbe, with its market, and Piazza dei Signori are the historic heart of the city.

Getting around

Taxis

Radio Taxi Verona answers day and night on 045 532666 and takes cards; there are ranks at Porta Nuova station, Piazza Brà, Piazza Erbe and Castelvecchio. Use licensed taxis with a roof sign and a meter.

Ride apps

Uber in Verona books licensed chauffeur cars rather than ordinary taxis.

From the airport

The AirLink bus (line 199) links Verona Villafranca Airport with Porta Nuova station in about 15 minutes, every 20 to 40 minutes from early morning to about 23:00, for €6 one way. Buy tickets at the arrivals machine, online or on board by card.

Public transport

ATV runs the city buses; its Ticket Bus Verona app sells single tickets and 1-, 3- and 7-day passes. Validate paper tickets before you travel.

Staying safe

The UK government’s advice for Italy asks visitors to keep away from demonstrations and to watch for pickpockets at busy sights. Australia’s Smartraveller advises normal safety precautions.

  • Watch your bag and phone around Piazza delle Erbe, the Arena and on buses.
  • Use licensed taxis only.
  • Don’t leave luggage in a parked car.
  • Carry photo ID.
