About Italy

  • Italy was one of the six founding members of what is now the European Union, and Rome is its capital.
  • It has 62 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • Many Italian cities charge a nightly tourist tax, usually paid at your hotel.

Staying safe

The UK government notes that some recent protests in northern Italian cities turned violent, so keep away from demonstrations; strikes can also disrupt travel. Australia’s Smartraveller advises normal safety precautions (updated 29 October 2026).

  • Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in city centres, at major sights and on public transport.
  • Use licensed taxis only; unlicensed drivers have no meter and can overcharge.
  • Don’t leave luggage in a parked car.
  • Local fines can apply for sitting on monument steps or buying from unlicensed street sellers. Carry photo ID.
  • Validate paper bus and train tickets before you travel.
