Read the region through its walls
Saxon settlers in southern Transylvania built fortified towns and churches, as well as castles such as Bran, to protect their communities and trade routes. UNESCO lists a group of these villages with fortified churches as World Heritage.
A regional guide can give context without turning a village into a backdrop. Notice how a wall follows a hill, how a gate controls a road, or how a church sits within its defences. Respect privacy, working farms and places of worship.
Stone, timber and tile
Stone and brick walls, timber galleries and steep tiled roofs give the region’s castles their outline. Each material answers a need: defence, shelter from mountain weather, or light and air inside thick walls.
Begin with a material and ask how it was made, repaired and used. A photograph alone cannot tell you who made a gallery or a roof, or the conditions in which they worked.
A Bran chapter
Bran Castle shows two lives in one building: a medieval fortress shaped by its rock, and a royal home arranged by Queen Marie in the 1920s.
Look at the meeting of the two: a timber gallery above an older stone wall, a furnished room inside a defensive tower, and the change in light as a narrow stair opens onto the courtyard.
