Read the city as a living place

The Moroccan National Tourist Office presents Tangier through its medina, Kasbah and meeting of cultural influences. The city gives the coastal visit a wider setting.

A city guide can provide context without turning a neighbourhood into a backdrop. Notice how a doorway meets a street or how people use a shared space. Respect residents, working businesses and places of worship.

Look at the work of making

The National Tourist Office’s Kasbah Museum introduction highlights zellij, plaster and carved wood. These are part of a different material world from the rock surfaces of the caves.

Begin with a material and ask how it is made, repaired and used. A photograph alone cannot name its maker or explain the conditions of their work. Future stories about individual craftspeople should carry their names and permission.

A coastal chapter

The Caves of Hercules invite a change of pace outside the city. The relationship between enclosed stone space and the open Atlantic offers another way to understand Tangier’s setting.

Look at the shift in light as you approach the sea opening, and at the traces and textures across the chambers. These observations begin a visit without claiming to explain every mark in the rock.

Make room for context

Pair the city reading with the caves’ history and the Journal. This is an introduction for visitors; our team does not manage these places, commission their restoration or represent their makers.
