Read the city as a living place

The Moroccan National Tourist Office presents Marrakech through its medina, palaces and cultural traditions. The city gives a palace visit a wider setting.

A city guide can provide context without turning a neighbourhood into a backdrop. Notice how a doorway meets a street or how people use a shared space. Respect residents, working businesses and places of worship.

Look at the work of making

Historic walls, patterned surfaces and carefully arranged spaces encourage visitors to look at the ways buildings are made. At El Badi Palace, surviving materials are part of a much larger architectural story.

Begin with a material and ask how it is made, repaired and used. A photograph alone cannot name its maker or explain the conditions of their work. Future stories about individual craftspeople should carry their names and permission.

A royal chapter

El Badi Palace offers an encounter with the scale of a Saadian royal project. Its great courtyard and the remains around it provide a different rhythm from the streets of the medina.

Look at the relationship between a wall and an open space, or at the depth of a doorway. These observations begin a visit without claiming to explain every fragment of the palace.

Make room for context

Pair the city reading with the palace’s history and the Journal. This is an introduction for visitors; our team does not manage these places, commission their restoration or represent their makers.
