About Türkiye

  • Most of Türkiye lies in Anatolia, in Asia; a smaller part, East Thrace, is in south-east Europe.
  • The Republic was proclaimed on 29 October 1923, and Ankara is the capital.
  • Since June 2022 the United Nations has used “Türkiye” as the country’s name, at Ankara’s request.
  • About 86 million people lived in Türkiye at the end of 2025.

Staying safe

The UK government advises against travel only within 10 km of the Syrian border, far from Istanbul. Elsewhere it asks visitors to stay alert to the risk of terrorism, regional tensions and possible flight disruption.

  • Pickpocketing and street robbery happen in the busiest tourist areas; keep valuables secure.
  • Be wary of strangers who offer drinks or invite you to a bar; buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.
  • Use registered taxis only, note the plate number and check that the meter is running.
  • Stay away from demonstrations.
