About Spain

  • Spain’s population reached a record 49.8 million in July 2026.
  • Its constitution protects the country’s range of languages as cultural heritage.

Staying safe

The UK government does not advise against travel to Spain; it notes a risk of terrorism and of protests at short notice. After a high-speed train collision on 28 October 2026, trains between Madrid and Andalucía were still suspended on 6 November, so check with your rail operator. Australia’s Smartraveller advises normal safety precautions.

  • Thieves often work in teams and use distraction, such as asking for directions or spilling something on you.
  • Don’t leave bags on chairs or the floor at cafés.
  • Real police may ask for ID but never for your wallet.
  • Use official taxis only, and carry photo ID.
