About Romania

  • Romania joined the European Union on 1 January 2007, and its capital is Bucharest.
  • It has been fully part of the Schengen area since 1 January 2025.
  • Romania has 11 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among them the Danube Delta and the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania.
  • About 19 million people live in Romania.

Staying safe

The UK government does not advise against travel to Romania. Drones from the war in Ukraine have entered Romanian airspace near the border, so follow local instructions and RO-Alert phone alerts. Australia’s Smartraveller advises normal safety precautions (updated 17 June 2026).

  • Pickpockets often work in groups on public transport, at stations and at airports.
  • Use authorised taxis or the ride apps, and ignore touts at airports and stations.
  • Real police officers do not stop people at random to ask for their wallet.
  • Use cash machines inside banks or shops.
  • Bears live in the Carpathians: never approach or feed wild animals.
