About Morocco

  • Morocco has nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites; the first, the medina of Fez, was listed in 1981.
  • Rabat is the capital, and its modern and historic city has been a World Heritage Site since 2012.
  • Morocco will co-host the 2030 football World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

Staying safe

The UK government’s advice notes a threat of terrorism in busy tourist places, and Australia’s Smartraveller advises a high degree of caution (updated 29 July 2026). Petty theft and scams are common in tourist areas, so stay alert in crowds.

  • Use licensed taxis, and ask for the meter or agree the fare before you set off.
  • Official guides carry a badge; ask to see it if someone offers to show you around.
  • Keep your card in sight when paying, and check goods before you leave a shop.
  • Drink alcohol only in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants; drinking in the street is illegal.
  • Moroccan sources also give 19 for police and 15 for fire and rescue.
